The Phi Decreed

Gallery talk and Q&A

I have lots of stories to share about the work of the Phi Decreed, most of which stem from failed attempts while developing my technique. The talk will be open to questions and likely move around the gallery to reference different artworks and concepts that motivated their existence.

This solo exhibit features work created in 2017 and 2018 that were informed by the golden ratio (phi). I have been reflecting on the thought that all of life is a space on which fractals can be imbedded. Fractal geometry has a self-similar replication that is found at a cosmological scale in the ever-expanding universe, as well as at the profoundly fundamental building blocks of life. When a DNA stand is viewed from the top-down, the layered double helix rotation abides by the golden ratio (phi). Kismet and Phidala are the first works to directly incorporate phi into my drawing process.

A new series of installations in this exhibit titled Ad Pondus Omnium (considering the weight of all things) explores a collaboration between my sensibility and forms that represent the subtle corruption of mathematical self-replication. The purity of fractal geometry and phi as starting points for growth are met with forces of nature that are beyond control. Thankfully, life has a way of circumventing predictability. By focusing on this premise, I participate in archetypes that are newly discovered yet familiar or indeterminate but known.
