He draws individual 2D layers coordinated with one another to generate 3D compositions. Each layer is cut into paper with a CNC laser, then stacked into the completed artwork. The layers are conceived as “events” in the vein of key-framing. Compositional decisions are made on areas that are 9.254mm wide and .355mm deep to create a consciously woven space. Because of Eric’s labor intensive process his works take months and sometimes years to create. His compositions are determined by removing material from each sheet of paper, and pre-visualizing the sum of the layers as line, color and space. He does not use processing or algorithm-generated elements but instead draws each line with a conscious effort toward a holistic goal. Eric’s technology-infused studio practice enables him to create complex artifacts within a realm of precision of that is often reserved for industry, mass production and scientific research. A realm that echoes humanity’s present-day union with technology. “Technology circumscribes boundaries, as do artists. In the distance and in my memory, I can hear children playing in the neighborhood through the woods behind the house I grew up in. Everything is a subspace of something else. Our physical bodies are subspaces of our consciousness. Memories are subspaces of the future. Fear, desire, and purpose are subspaces of faith. These are not simply smaller spaces that fit inside larger ones. Paper breaths light through its fibers, absorbing, transmitting and reflecting color in relation to its surroundings. The projection of a two-dimensional surface into three-dimensional space by layering laser cut paper is related to our ability as living beings to navigate space and occupy the dimension of time. The objects I create start from lived experiences that revolve around paradoxes. I use these concepts to guide my decisions about color, pattern, density and form to create novel compositions that do not fit into recognizable icons or symbols.
